Ideal shotgun cart bag?

Postby humperdingle » Tue Jan 14, 2014 5:06 pm

So i'm going to make myself a leather shotgun cartridge bag...

Ideally, it's going to fit 3 or 4 actual cart boxes in it (as opposed to chucking them all in loose).

This way, I can take different loads in the same bag and not be rooting-around, trying to find the ones I want.

What else should I be incorporating into the design, chaps?

I don't think much can beat a 100 capacity bag of traditional design in good quality leather. The top opening (under the flap) is probably the hardest part to get right - large enough to get a hand in and exit with a full fist of cartridges, but small enough for cartridges no to fall out by themselves. I guess a snug fitting flap is key here.
I'd be very interested if you start making these! The usual suppliers want about £200 for something well enough made to stand the test of time.

Yeh they're not cheap, although there are some budget makes out there.

I'm envisaging something more 'boxy' looking, as opposed to the rounded traditional styles.

Try and incorporate a piece of thin ply into the base to stiffen it and the individual boxs will not come apart the same. Baz

Shaun.

That's closer... But not as deep, perhaps.

The bag I made for my missus here: download/file.php?id=6395&mode=view

Is similarish.

Is that bag handy, Shaun? Wouldn't mind a wee look straight down inside it.

I read somewhere about bags specially made with a wired rim to keep the opening wide and easy to get in one handed.
I have also heard about short sleeves over any buckles to protect gun stocks from scratches.

perhaps some loops on the outside bag face, front of the flap or strap for carrying a handful of heavy shotshells or for quick access without rooting in the bag?

Here you go, it's made up of two sides that also form the base and the two flaps at the top, a back, front and the lid is separate and hinged at the back.

that would be a god send :) ,but i would put two rows on each side/end of the bag, nothing worse than scrambling around for carts when you need a a quick reload :worried:

If it was for game, yes, but purely for clays, I wouldn't really need that.
