20-30 winchester

A few years back I bought a Marlin 336 in 30-30 Winchester.

I used 2 different bullets and loads.

one is a hardcast 150gn round nose flat point gas check which I loaded 9.4gn of Unique powder, very accurate for plinking target fun and close foxing round chicken pens. Delivering about 1200fps

The 2nd load was a Sierra 150gn Jacketed soft flat point bullet loaded with Varget

When the dictatorship eu banned Varget I had to search for a new load, Varget just seemed to be a nice do-it-all powder.

I purchased a tub IMR 4166 Enduron as was marked as being close to Varget, In 223Rem it is as good if not better. The copper fouling is reduced too. I loaded up some 30-30Win with it and was pleased with the results, about 1 1/2 inch group at 100 yards using the Sierra bullet.

As a regular reader on gun forums to see what others use, the Hornaday 150gn round nose soft point bullet is popular choice, so as I needed some bullets this time round I bought these instead.

Using the Hogdon load data of IMR 4166 these bullets deliver an average of 55fps faster than the Sierra bullet with the same load.

I have been converted to Hornaday 150gn round nose interlock bullet in the 30-30

I found that Sierra 110 round nose bullet with a IMR 3031 load is deadly accurate in my Winchester Model 94. I don't shoot it much 30-30 any more. I prefer the Winchester model 92's in 38-40, 44-40, and 44 Magnum. My favorite of the group is the 44 Magnum. It's just super fun to shoot. The Model 92's are built for shorter cartridge lengths. I am unable to use anything more than a 200 grain bullet in 44-40 and 44 Magnum due to that issue.

I did shoot tons of 30-30 in my post 1964 Winchester Model 94. So much so that the action loosen. When I fired factory loads i the action opens a bit and dropping the lever a 1/4 to 1/2 inch or so forcibly. I now only used somewhat reduced handloads. I loved shooting those 110 grain bullets. I did call Winchester in New Haven at the time and discussed the problem and they told me that I should buy a new rifle. I did however they are all Miruko made Winchester. There lever rifles are much better than the post 64 New Haven Winchesters. I have five of them plus a the New Haven Model 94 in 30-30. I have loads of semi auto rifles which I do enjoy but the Winchester lever guns are in a class of their own and great to shoot,
The faster I go, the older I get.
