308 chambering problem

I'm new to 308 but not at all to reloading. My problem is, a shell that is sized fits the shell gage perfectly, insert the bullet and most no longer fit perfectly to pretty bad. The bullet is a Hornady ELD-X, which is a boat tail bullet, when I seat the bullets, some take quite a bit of pressure to get them to begin to seat some go smooth which I'd bet my life is the same cartridges that fit the gage verses don't. I am greasing up the finger I place the bullet with so it's lubed and it's still randomly a problem. I'm using Hornady dies.

I would say that this is likely to be a quality control issue with the Hornaday bullet they may be a thou too big

Try the Sierra tipped match king bullet to see if you have the same issues, you might even find they are the better bullet as I did.

Did you check the diameter of the bullets? If they are all the same than it is the brass. If the neck of case is too thick and and you size them the case will fit in the check die but the inside of the case neck will be too small. Check the out side diameter of the necks with a bullet seated.
