Winchester 52B an 52D

Postby Calfed » Wed Nov 11, 2020 11:16 pm

Years ago (7 years ago, to be exact) I bought two Winchester target .22 rifles...a Winchester model 52B and a model 52D. Embarrassingly, I have not fired either rifle until this week.

I Recently started shooting in a 50 yard and 100 yard .22 rifle match at my local range and scoped both rifles so I could use them.

The 52B originally came with a Wittek-Vaver rear sight. I've also been told that it has a Canjar trigger. I put an EGW scope rail on it and shot it after the match today. I tried both Eley "Match" and Lapua Center-X. Both rifles seemed to like the Center-X better than the Eley.

I was a bit concerned about the EGW rail because it only attaches with the screw holes for the rear scope block. The groups look good, however. I put a Nikon 6-18 Buckmaster scope with a fine crosshair and target dot on the 52B (bottom rifle)

Here is the target for the 52B...5 shot groups @ 50 yards off a sand bag rest

I mounted a Ken Viani rail on the 52D and put a B&L 6-24 x 40 scope with a duplex reticle on it.

Again, the 52D seemed to like the Center-X batter than the Eley "Match"

Very nice. I love those early Remingtons and Winchesters. There have such nice blue steel and walnut features. I like my AR 15's and plastic but those blue steel and wood rifles are absolutely great and shoot wonderfully.
The faster I go, the older I get.

That's a gap I can fill! I have a Winchester 52C with the extra heavy barrel. A superb rifle. Has a slightly heavy trigger, apparently to comply with rules at the time so cannot be adjusted lower than whatever it is, but it's sweet as a nut for all that.

If you don't have to give up your car because other people commit crimes in their cars, why should I have to give up my firearms because other people commit crimes with their firearms?

Thanks, Flinty. Getting involved in that small bore match got me off the dime to mount a scope and get shooting it. I have a Remington 40X I also am readying for the match.

Nice 52C, Shootist. Beautiful stock and metal. How long is your barrel?

Is that a Redfield 3200 scope you have mounted?

24 inches long. The barrel at the action is 1.25" diameter!

That's the one. The best scope, in term of image clarity, I have ever seen, let alone owned.

Those are nice scopes. You see them, butthey are not as common as they once were.

Here is what the 52B and 52D looked like before I scoped them. The Vaver sight on the B is amazingly smooth and fine, Swiss watch like'

Some of the 75s came with a brown leather sling, 1" wide with the "Winchester" logo stamped on it, if the 75 has the sling it raises the cost by 100. I have a minty 75 with the factory sling and a Unertl 3/4" target scope mounted on it, shoots lights out, I paid 600 for the rifle w/sling probably 8 years ago, the scope is worth more then the rifle...
