HORNADY HMR AMMO again!!!!!!!!!!!!

Postby Buffy Vampire Slayer » Sun Apr 17, 2016 11:52 am

well,i`ve the need to contact hornady AGAIN this morning which is the second time in 13 months regarding an episode with one of their v-max rounds yesterday afternoon.
I was out rabbiting and had shot about 10 rounds with no problem when I chambered the next round and pulled the trigger all I got was a "click" with no "bang" to follow it.
so I pointed gun into ground in front of me and waited.
nothing!!!!
so,i ejected the round and noticed straight away the bullet head was missing
on further inspection, there was a pronounced indentation in the case where the firing pin had impacted and upon looking into the case it was still full of propellant and there was a stress fracture in the case neck .
so as of now,i have a 17 grn v-max stuck in the barrel awaiting a reply from hornady sometime tomorrow hopefully.
I haven`t attempted to remove it yet as I want to see what their reply is first plus I don`t have a dowel of the correct diameter or length.

I can`t believe the amount of posts on shooting forums regarding this round in the last few weeks :turd: :turd: :turd:
and it all seems to be hornady ammo :hmm:

Cant believe you gave them another chance after the last time.
HMR is a lovely little round, but the ammo is flawed and potentially dangerous.

Would it be worth pulling the bullet out of another round and just fire it out with the remaining cartridge and contents?. Can't see why it wouldn't be a safe and easy way to do it as long as the power doesn't spill away from the primer to much (load with barrel upright and fire level into an embankment?).

I think if they haven't sorted the ammo problems after all these years, then it's time to get rid or just deal with it.

Looked at a 17HMR but with the well known ammo problems decided to go with 22 Hornet plus i can reload, just finished reloading another batch with my cast bullets

I have never had any issues with Hornaday 17hmr ammo, though I find it not as accurate as the Winchester 20 Gn XTP or the CCI Gamepoint.

I have a few boxes of the Hornaday that I use for bunnies and it's good enough for that, though I went over to using the 22wmr as a good all rounder.

It's not just Hornady, I have had it with other brands too, even Federal, which I thought was the only one not loaded by CCI.

I check every round before loading it into my MTM ammo wallet thingy, since I have done that I haven't had a stuck bullet issue, but I do have a growing stack of rounds with a split neck which I don't want to shoot...
With this "sorted" ammo accuracy is acceptable, not what it was years ago, it's such a pity, it is the perfect calibre/power level for rabbits, but the ammo problem spoils it.

Next time I buy some I intend to sort it in the shop and see what they say.

the last time I had a problem (march last year) which involved a massive breach explosion/overpressure, i contacted hornady, who in turn contacted me and edgar bros (their UK importers) who arranged for the gun and suspect ammo to be collected.
the gun was repaired and the 300 rounds that I sent back was replaced with 600 rounds.
this problem is nothing to do with the ammo edgars supplied me last year (which I was informed is the newer stuff that has had a further/extra annealing process) which has red polymer tips.
this is some blue tipped stuff which I acquired at the start of this year from a mate who was getting rid of his hummer.
the stuff I returned to edgars last year was also blue tipped.

I was informed that the blue tips were originally made for the HM2 but over produced and were then put into HMR ammo.
If you don't have to give up your car because other people commit crimes in their cars, why should I have to give up my firearms because other people commit crimes with their firearms?

I have red tip Hornady, purchased after the blue tip ran out, though admittedly at least a year ago no, it has as many split cases as the blue tip stuff had.

You can see the stress lines on the cases, even the ones which haven't actually split. I really hope they sort it, but it didn't happen with the arrival of the red tip ammo.

I have just spoken to edgar bros and they have agreed to take the remaining blue tipped rounds I have (they are from 2010) and replace them with new rounds
all I have to do is take them back to my rfd and he will swap them straight away 8-)
