A friend of mine has expresses an interest in getting a 45 70 Springfield model 1873 and he asked me if they fired modern bullets/ammo.
It is not something I know anything about so any information would be appreciated.

I reload 45-70. I've shot black powder loads and smokless powder loads. People do reload smokeless powder in the Model 1873. The loads are reduced when compared to the loads that can be shot out of modern rifle with a much stronger action. The 45-70 is really a handloaders gun and the loads can be tailored for whatever action that you are shooting.
The faster I go, the older I get.

if you look at the Hogdons powder reloading data the list 3 types of action, you need to use the lowest charge rate data it states Trap Door actions

Powder bullet charge start max
IMR 4198 405gn RNFP 30gn 32gn

This is a nice load that you can shoot all day, I use it in my lever action Henry when I feel like a wimp

Always check load data with powder manufacturer

Part of the beauty of the 45-70 is the variety of loads it can use. Be aware that there are three levels of load, from low to high as Trapdoor, modern lever actions, and Ruger No.1 / Siamese Mauser. The latter is brutal. 405 grain cast bullets are widely available and shoot well. A pussycat load is 12-14 grains of Unique behind such a bullet.
If you don't have to give up your car because other people commit crimes in their cars, why should I have to give up my firearms because other people commit crimes with their firearms?
