Joe,

The Harris are nice and reliable, get one with the swivel head then add a (real) Pod-loc. There are a pile of chinese and other knock offs of the Harris if your conscience allows :thdn:

The Atlas is nice but about twice the price.

I have one of those, very stable, but not so sure if it'd be that good for hunting, on the range it's great.

At the risk of sounding like an old grump, I would say if its your first rifle, learn to shoot it without a bipod first. ;)

Then, in terms of quality for price, Harris is probably all you are likely to need.

What calibre and what are you actually going to be using it for? (I note the comment about a tactical looking project, but not sure what that means). If you are shooting only on a square range, off a bench or prone, then a shorter bipod will work fine.

If in the field and anticipate using the rifle in all conditions, I used to use a long bipod, which would allow sitting shots over long grass, but frankly it was so cumbersome, I took the bloody thing off and now carry shooting sticks- its makes for a nicer balanced rifle, and the shooting sticks are good on rough footing, too. Its not quite as steady as a bipod, but close enough and for quick short range off the shoulder stuff the rifle feels altogether better.

Amen to shooting sticks. Gives you far better shot options than ground level angles.

hey guys thanks for all the replys!!l basically what I mean by tactical just abit of a military feel like olive green cerakote stock.. big mod on the front just something abit custom as for the guns use it will be used in the field for rabbits and foxes most of the time being shot from the roof of a landrover at night and it will also be used as abit of a range toy so I need the best of both world really....

Sounds cool.

I would go for bags off a Landy roof - its a bit springy for a bipod, and might throw your shots a little.

The most important factors to consider when choosing a bipod is the caliber/recoil of the weapon and the weight of the weapon. Remember a lightweight rifle, shooting a large caliber, will recoil more than a heavy rifle shooting a lighter recoiling caliber. A bipod is a foundational piece of gear for a precision rifle, and they don’t just help for prone shots. Some bipod designs are packed with features that help you get steady from a variety of positions and barricades. You can check some reliable options of bipod/tripod on beonhome.com. Like other rifle components, a bipod started off as a basic piece of gear with a straight-forward, but narrow, application. The Harris bipod and Atlas bipod are still the most popular bipods I guess, as they combining to represent 83% of the top shooters.
