That seems a bit random... I assume you like them as you have 4 of them?

I like Spyderco's. They make nice commercial and utile knives. I've own several and carried Spyderco Civilian for years when I worked at a electric generation the had oil transfer facility. I used that knife for everything and it was hard use all of the way. The knife survived the water front work and now resides in a drawer at home. It's finish is beat and the blade has loosened a bit otherwise it still a viable working knife. Spyderco does make a nice product.

I didn't realize that Spyderco changed the handle of the Civilian from the metal alloy handle. I just read a bunch of reviews on the knife and the said it wasn't for every use only self defense. I was dealing with chemical bags, fiber glassed woven sand bags, oil booms and lots of spill containment material and hoses that were all heavy polypropylene mesh construction, and rope. The hook claw and serrated blade was the ideal tool to cut into those materials. The knife is flat in shape an fit easily in my pocket and since I was using it with brackish sea water the alloy construction with stood the water's corrosive effect. I would not be my first choice as a hunting knife but worked like a top at the oil transfer facility.

While working at the facility I ran into a fellow called Richard Richard Radecki who was a US Navy salvage diving master chief and the technical advisor for the movie "Men of Honor". He was working for a company called Jamestown Marine who was conducting and on site oil spill response training session at our site. He was a real character and fun to be around. One of the things that he said was that you need to have a good knife on the waterfront and he pulled out his folding hunter to show the type of knife that he carried. I then pulled out my Spyderco Civilian. That was a Crocodile Dundee moment however Rich said that not a knife, that's scary. I really enjoyed working with him for that short time and he made a impression on me as he was the real thing the they tried to portray in the "Men of Honor".

This is a image of him when he worked on the movie. He looks every bit the part of a retired US Navy salvage diving master chief. He was a real character and a really nice guy.

I thought Spydercos were mostly all made in Seki, Japan. The probably are made in China now. In any case, by US law and for the last 100 years or so all products sold in the US has to have the country of origin identified somewhere on the product. My Spyderco Civilian is one the first the came out in the 1990's when supposedly sales to civilians of that particular knife were unauthorized. It proudly has "Seki City, Japan" stamped on the blade . The Seki City label on my knife doesn't make it any less collectible if only it wasn't a working knife and in better condition. No matter it served me well.

Not any more. Cheaper models are made in China mostly.

Only the smaller one I have is from Japan. The rest are China made. Steel is still good quality but not Seki City quality :)
